Two- and three-story Tudor-style townhouses with
their manicured front lawns, cherry and crab apple
trees, and quaint narrow streets dominate Foxhall
Village. On the exteriors are leaded windows,
curved chimney pots, stone globes on pediments and
stone crests affixed to facades. A few Federal-style
townhouses and detached homes are also located in the Village. In the 1990s, a row of
townhouses was built on
the southeast corner of Reservoir Road and Foxhall.
HIGHLIGHTS
Foxhall Village is like a small European village. With
few through streets, the neighborhood feels secluded
even though it is bordered by Reservoir and Foxhall
Roads. A small shopping center on Foxhall Road serves
the community, but the neighborhood's location provides an easy walk
to Georgetown. Georgetown University and its hospital
are
directly to the East.
HISTORY
The name Foxhall comes from one of the area's early
residents, Henry Foxall, an English gentleman and
friend of Thomas Jefferson. Mr. Foxall lived in a large
home called Spring Hill Farm which was located at what
is now 44th and P Street. In 1799 he built the Columbia
Foundry, producing cannons and munitions from 1803
until 1854 in today's Glover-Archbold Park. During the
War of 1812 the foundry was the intended target of
British troops, but as they marched from the burning White House toward the foundry, a thunderstorm
drove them back. Henry Foxall built the Foundry United
Methodist Church in thanks.
Construction on Foxhall Village began in the 1920s when
Harry Boss returned from a trip to Bath, England. He was
determined to replicate the stuccoed Tudor-style houses
he had seen. His construction company, Boss & Phelps,
built their first homes on Greenwich Park and Reservoir
Road. By 1927 almost 150 homes were completed. Waverly
Taylor, former vice president and general manager of
Shannon and Luchs' construction division, formed his own
company and completed Foxhall Village after Boss &
Phelps developed the first section.
