The majority of
homes in Garfield are townhouses, many with front porticoes or
porches. The houses are usually two or three stories and
were built between 1905 and 1929. Their designs are
modest brick townhouses in Flemish, Mediterranean, and
English styles. There are also
condominiums in Garfield located on Connecticut Avenue. They range
from the Cathedral Park garden apartments built in 1929 to
Woodley Park Place built in 1998.
HIGHLIGHTS
Most people, including residents, refer to their
neighborhood as Cleveland Park, but Garfield which is
located on both sides of Connecticut Avenue has a
character all its own. Some of the confusion arises from
the fact that the Old Woodley Park Historic District is a
large portion of Garfield. While the Garfield neighborhood is small, it has more of
what many larger communities do not possess. On its eastern
border is one of the largest attractions in the city, the National Zoological Park.
Garfield also has a small
commercial district on Connecticut Avenue. The Woodley
Park-Zoo Metro stop is located within its borders. Aiden Montessori School and Oyster Elementary School
are in the neighborhood. There are numerous shops and
restaurants on both sides of Connecticut Avenue that are
housed in some of the early 20th century rowhouses. The
Omni Shoreham and Marriott Wardman Park Hotel
complexes are on the southern border of Garfield. A mural
of Marilyn Monroe looks out on Calvert Street.
HISTORY
Like its neighbors to the west and north, Garfield was a
part of the parcel of land patented to George Beall of Georgetown in 1723 which was subsequently
bought by Uriah Forrest, Benjamin Stoddert, and William
Deakins to create
Pretty Prospects (see history of
Cleveland Park).
Part of the Woodley estate (see history of
Woodley Park)
was on land which is now the Garfield
neighborhood. Garfield was also part of the property
belonging to Thomas Waggaman which was sold off to other
developers when the Cleveland Park financier went
bankrupt in 1905. Harry Wardman and other influential
real estate developers began to purchase land in the
Garfield area and built rowhouses and large apartment
buildings on Connecticut Avenue during the development
boom between 1905 and 1930. Commerical development
became more prevalent after 1930, and many of the
townhouses on Connecticut Avenue were converted into
stores and restaurants.
