Several
streets of rowhouses remain in the West End, and the
area is coveted by those wanting to walk to their
offices. Many of the townhouses have been renovated and
most streets could be confused with Georgetown. A few
rows of townhouses are now condominiums. Several large
condominium buildings have been built in the West End.
The Ritz Carlton was completed a few years ago, and
Michael Jordan and other celebrities moved in before the
building was completed. It has been the Ritz Carlton
that raises the price of condos in the West End. Across
the street, 22West became available in summer of 2008. The former Columbia Hospital was replaced by a condominium complex and,
almost as a reversal of trends, a large office building
was redesigned as a condominium.
HIGHLIGHTS
Most people don't know where the West End ends and its
adjacent neighborhoods begin. Some don't realize that
there is a thriving, close-knit, and growing intown
neighborhood with easy walking distance to Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, and
DuPont Circle and their shopping, restaurants, and
historic sites. To satisfy
the daytime needs of those who work in the canyons of
office buildings, the West End also has its share of
shopping and fine restaurants. The
West End has a food market, Trader Joe's, in the complex on the grounds of the former Columbia
Hospital for Women.
The Northwest corner of the neighborhood is bordered by
Rock Creek Park whose paths can lead joggers and bikers
south to the river or head north deeper into the park.
Also available for residents is the Francis Recreation
Center with tennis courts, playing field, and renovated
pool. Next to the center is Francis Junior High School.
Stevens Elementary School, where President Carter's
daughter, Amy, attended, was
also located in the West End. The charter elementary
school, School for Arts in Learning, is located on 16th
Street. A local post office, police station, and public
library, and provide additional services
to the West End.
HISTORY
The West End was part of L'Enfant's 1791 plan for the
city. Washington Circle was designed as the last circle
on the western border of the city. The neighborhood
began to develop around 1870 and into the 20th Century.
The buildings were largely rowhouses. Beginning in the
1950s, numerous blocks of houses, particularly on the
eastern edge, were torn down to make room for large
office buildings. By the late 1980s, preservationists
stepped in to retain what was left of the West End.
