spacious lots. The homes of Paul Stone (see
below) often included expansive
entrance foyers, formal dining rooms, maid's
quarters, libraries, and screened
porches. The styles of homes include
Colonial, Tudor, and Beaux Art, either
bricked or stuccoed. There are also a few
blocks of more modern homes - ranches,
split-levels and ramblers,
but many are being replaced or renovated.
The few town homes in Crestwood are wide with
large front porches.

People on their way to enjoy the pleasures of Rock Creek Park or taking their children to play soccer on a Saturday morning on the fields adjacent to the tennis courts seemed to always ask what was the name of the Crestwood neighborhood and wondered why they had not heard of it. Shade trees, expansive lawns, and majestic homes exemplify much of Crestwood. In addition to the tranquil, sylvan atmosphere of the streets of Crestwood, the community is surrounded on three sides by Rock Creek Park and Piney Branch Park. The William H. G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center and adjacent tennis courts, playground, and soccer fields and the Carter Baron Amphitheatre are north and northwest of the neighborhood, and the Art Barn is to the southwest. The Parkmont School, a 6th through 12th grade private school, is located on 16th Street. About 2,000 people live in Crestwood. The neighborhood, like others along the Gold Coast, as 16th Street was often called, is filled with churches. Algonquin Indians were the first known inhabitants of today's Crestwood. One of the earliest settlers was Henry Darnall who owned about 6,000 acres in 1688. By the end of the 17th century, there were many mills located on Rock Creek Park. Thomas Blagden owned one of the mills and the surrounding land, much of which made up the southwest section of Crestwood. He named his property Argyle, after the second largest county in Scotland. In the early 1850s, he sold his large farm east of the creek to the city as the site for St. Elizabeth's Hospital for the Insane which was later moved to the southeastern section of the city. Development of the area began in the 1920s. The northeastern section was promoted as a suburban neighborhood with custom-built homes and was inhabited by Jewish and Catholic residents. The southwest section was developed by Paul P. Stone and Avone Shockey as a wooded country yet downtown district. Their model home won the first Silver Star Model Home in 1940 by the local newspaper, the Evening Star. The 187 lot subdivision was called Crestwood Community. The developers had restrictive covenants forbidding sales to Jews or blacks. Because of the war, construction was stalled, and development by Stone began in the 1950s. Harry Wardman, famous Washington master builder, had a home in Crestwood as did Clark Griffith, owner of the Washington Senators baseball franchise. West Virginia John D. Rockefeller IV and his wife bought a 22-acres estate in 1985 for over $6 million.
