The majority of homes in Eckington are Victorian townhouses or row houses with front porches built in the 1920s. The houses in the Northwest section are higher priced than those in Southeast. Recently, homes have been bought by new owners and renovated. Eckington is another one of the neighborhoods in Washington DC that is gaining attention from homebuyers, developers, and retailers. Eckington is located in both Northwest and Northeast Washington. Samuel Gompers' house was declared a landmark on the National Register of Historic Place in 1974. Two elementary schools, Emery and Shaed, are in the neighborhood. The Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center provides residents with tennis courts and a swimming pool. There is also a wholesale flower market in Eckington. The neighborhood is close to the amenities, particularly the fine restaurants, of Mount Vernon Square and Penn Central. Most of Eckington was just outside the city limits when L'Enfant made his plan for the federal city. Joseph Gales, an Englishman, purchased most of the land in Eckington after the Civil War and named it after his hometown in England. While LeDroit Park was being developed to the east (see history of LeDroit Park) in 1877, most of today's Eckington was still countryside with orchards, country estates and a mix of commercial properties. Because of the intersection of two rural roads, Eckington began to develop. Train yards and transportation routes in and out of the city were established on the eastern side. By 1890 Silas Daish set up a large flour mill, one of only two in the city. The roads were unpaved, large telephone poles were prevalent, and industrial activity continued to grow. By the turn of the century, developers began to build houses to the east of LeDroit Park. Roads were improved and paved and the trolley lines were extended. The subdivision of Bloomingdale, which resides in both today's LeDroit Park and Eckington, opened in the late 1890s. Other developers in the area were Harry Wardman and S. H. Meyers who came in after 1910. Samuel Gompers, who headed the AFL-CIO, lived in a house he built in Eckington in 1900 before moving to Cleveland Park.
