The Hawthorne neighborhood is unique in that it is
solely single-family homes. The ramblers, split-level
homes, and Cape Cods were built in the 1950s. A few new
homes in Hawthorne have been constructed over the last
decade.
HIGHLIGHTS
Hawthorne could be the only neighborhood in Washington
that is not physically connected to another DC
neighborhood. The eastern side of Hawthorne is the uppermost part of
Rock Creek Park, and the southern border is Pinehurst
Parkway. The neighborhood's western border is
Western Avenue, and the Montgomery County subdivision
of Village of Martins Addition is on the other side of
the Avenue.
The neighborhood exudes tranquility and an old-fashioned
neighborly atmosphere. There is no commercial development in
Hawthorne. A few of the streets bear the names of trees
like the streets in Shepherd Park, its neighbor east of the park.
HISTORY
Most people assume that Hawthorne is part of Chevy
Chase, but this small enclave was not a part of the land
developed by the Chevy Chase Land Company (see history
of
Chevy
Chase). It
was, however, part of the 3,000 acres granted to Thomas
Addison and James Stoddert in 1713, the half that, when
divided, went to Stoddert. The area remained relatively
undeveloped until the 1950s.
