Wesley Heights is home to some of the largest Colonials
in Washington. Other luxury homes are stylized Cape Cods,
New Orleans, and Georgians as well as a few split levels,
bungalows, and Tudors. Most homes have sizeable,
manicured front lawns and stately trees. Part of
the neighborhood is on rolling hills, and yards seem to
disappear into the woods. Wesley Heights also have
several townhouse communities.
HIGHLIGHTS
Much of Wesley Heights looks as if homes and lawns were
dropped into woodland. The eastern border of the
neighborhood is Glover-Archbold Park
and part of the western border is Battery Kemble Park.
Deer can
occasionally be seen venturing out of the parks. Yet,
Wesley Heights has two shopping centers side-by-side
on New Mexico Avenue. One is home to Balducci's,
formerly Sutton Place Gourmet, and a popular restaurant
with outdoor seating. Foxhall Square, in addition to
numerous medical offices, has upscale shops, a pharmacy,
bank, and Starbucks. (Randall Hagner had an office in
Foxhall Square until it moved to a larger location on
Wisconsin Avenue). Mann Elementary School is located
across the street from Foxhall Square.
HISTORY
Until
the 1920s, Wesley
Heights was farmland. By the turn of the
century, as Washingtonians began to spend their summers
west of the city, they often traveled through the area to
reach their destinations in Kent and Palisades and into
Bethesda, Maryland. (see history of
Kent
and
Palisades).
John F. Waggaman bought much of the area that is now
Wesley Heights in 1890. By the panic of 1893, however,
he was ready to sell. Over the next 30 years, the area
had several owners until H. Roger Dulany bought it. W.C. and A.N. Miller, who built their first development
in Cleveland Park (see history of
Cleveland Park)
purchased the land in the mid 1920s from Dulany. Their first homes
were built along Klingle Street, near New Mexico Avenue.
The houses were built on rectangular lots with varied
motifs and materials. All styles of homes were
"revival" - Colonial, Georgian, Dutch Colonial, Spanish
Colonial, Tudor, and a few hybrids of each. In their
advertising brochures Wesley Heights was described as
the "Garden Spot of Washington." The Millers planned Wesley Heights with a community club
house and shuttle service to and from the
streetcar on Wisconsin Avenue. In 1925, the community
newsletter called "The Leaves of Wesley Heights"
began. The neighborhood was developed over the next 30
years.
